Top 3 Tips for Choosing the Right Summer Activity for Your Child with Developmental Disabilities<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\nAs staff at AbilityPath\u2019s Family Resource Center, who are also parents of a child with developmental disabilities, we ask ourselves each summer, \u201cWhat are the best activities for our kids?\u201d\u00a0 Like most parents, the answer is always — summer camps! They offer a variety of options, locations, themes, and times, including day-only activities and overnight stays. I have been sending my son August to summer camps for several years now.\u00a0 August, who is a teenager, has autism.\u00a0 So, from one parent to another, I\u2019ve collected camp ideas and tips to help you get the ball rolling.<\/p>\n

1. Start with Your Kid\u2019s Interests and Preferences:\u00a0<\/b>As parents, we each have unique insight into our children\u2019s preferences, triggers, and strengths. Instead of jumping into an overwhelming list of potential camps, start with these introspective questions to reduce the options, helping you find a good fit for your child.<\/p>\n\n- \u201cWhat does my child like to do? What is he or she really interested in?\u201d\u00a0<\/b>This question fits all children, including those with developmental disabilities. Kids are more likely to participate when they like the topic\/theme! Sometimes, I\u2019ve had parents stop and say, \u201cWhoa. I hadn’t thought of it that way.\u201d Start with your child\u2019s preferences, such as art, space, horses, or the outdoors. If you need more insight, ask your kid!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\n- \u201cIs it possible for my child with developmental disabilities to attend this camp\/activity?\u201d\u00a0<\/b>I have an older son who attended a specific camp, and I later asked the staff if it would be an option for my younger son with developmental disabilities to attend. Honestly, many camps are open to the idea and you\u2019d be surprised how often staff have experience\/training that enables them to support your child.\u00a0Don\u2019t limit yourself to just camps that have a focus on helping children with developmental disabilities<\/i>.<\/b>If your child would enjoy a specific theme, like an art camp, ask.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\n- \u201cWhat kind of setting does my child prefer?\u201d\u00a0<\/b>Does your child do better in large or small groups? Does he or she need one-on-one assistance? Do loud settings stress your child or not? These questions will help you determine whether or not the activities you are considering would be enjoyable and a good fit for your child. For example, look at local options, like the YMCA or parks and rec, which usually offer small-group day camps that are perfect for younger, first-time campers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
2. Filter Camp Options:<\/b>\u00a0Skip those camps that would stress or bore your child, as mentioned above. Only mark activities your child would benefit from and genuinely enjoy. Now, narrow your top choices by asking …<\/p>\n\n- \u201cWhat is your schedule?\u201d\u00a0<\/b>Call the director or organizer and ask specific questions that help you determine if the camp\u2019s setting would support your child\u2019s routine and related preferences, like when meals are served. A phone call can quickly help you decide if a specific camp would work or not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\n- \u201cMay I come visit with my child?\u201d<\/b>\u00a0If you need more information about a local camp, ask if you and your child can stop by. Visiting can help with the final decision. Plus, if you have a child who is a visual processor, like my son, he\/she can actually see and understand what the camp will look like and be like.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
3. Make the Selection.\u00a0<\/b>You\u2019ve narrowed it down to ideally one … maybe two options. Excellent! Consider these additional questions to help determine whether or not a camp is a good fit:<\/p>\n\n- \u201cMay I come shadow my child the first day?\u201d<\/b>\u00a0If needed, inquire about being on hand to help your child transition into the new camp environment. You can also ask if there is a possibility for your child to meet camp counselors or key staff members before camp starts.<\/li>\n
- Is it possible to get updates? What is the best and simplest way to communicate with my child or staff members during the week?<\/b><\/li>\n
- Can I talk with another family as a reference before booking?
<\/b><\/li>\n- If the camp specifically supports those with developmental disabilities, what credentials do the teachers carry?<\/b><\/li>\n
- What is the staff-to-child ratio?<\/b><\/li>\n
- How does the camp staff handle conflict or bullying?<\/b><\/li>\n
- How do staff handle discipline or calming-down time when behavior is escalated or the child becomes over stimulated?<\/b><\/li>\n
- Does the camp offer a variety of foods for the picky eater or for children with dietary restrictions?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- Steve and Kate\u2019s Camp<\/b><\/a>\u00a0– Steve and Kate\u2019s philosophy is that kids can do anything, and they have built a camp culture around that idea.<\/li>\n
- Very Special Camps<\/b>\u00a0– VSP has a list of\u00a0California camps<\/a>\u00a0(and camps all over the nation) that specifically cater to children with a large variety of developmental disabilities. From extreme action\/sports camps for the blind and visually impaired to residential camping experience for at-risk youth with developmental disabilities, there is something for every individual.<\/li>\n

The Individualized Education Plan (IEP)\u00a0<\/b>is an important legal document that is the basis of instruction and supports for your child. The IEP summarizes your child\u2019s current skills and abilities, established educational goals and objectives (where appropriate) for the school year, describes programs and services designed to assist your child in making progress towards those goals and indicates how often progress towards the goals will be reported to you, the parent.<\/span><\/p>\nThe IEP is developed with input from parents and must indicate what services will be provided to your child and the frequency, duration and location of these services.<\/span><\/p>\nThe school district will contact you to schedule an IEP meeting at a mutually agreed upon time and place. At this meeting, you will be asked to share your concerns for your child educationally, as well as the strengths of your child. You will find a\u00a0<\/span>Parent Input Form\u00a0<\/b>on the San Mateo County Office of Education website link below<\/span>,\u00a0<\/b>which we encourage you to use to gather your thoughts about the information you wish to share with the other members of the IEP team. Should you wish to bring someone to support you at this IEP, you may do so. You can expect that there will be several educational professionals present at this meeting. Present should be any member of the multidisciplinary team who assessed your child, an administrator who can commit resources to support your child\u2019s proposed program, a translator should you need one, the classroom teacher (if the proposed program includes such a placement).<\/span><\/p>\nAt this meeting reports on the results of the evaluations will be presented and discussed. You should feel free to stop and ask questions whenever something is discussed that is unclear to you. You will hear the phrase, \u201c<\/span>present levels of performance\u201d\u00a0<\/b>at the meeting. This refers to the information that has been gathered from a variety of sources such as assessments, observations, and work samples. If you share outside assessments with the team, it must be understood that the recommendations and findings of outside assessors must be\u00a0<\/span>considered\u00a0<\/b>by the educational team, but not necessarily adopted by the IEP team.<\/span><\/p>\nAfter the results of the assessments have been reviewed, eligibility will be discussed. If your child is found eligible for Special Education services, proposed goals will be presented. These goals typically will be designed to support your child\u2019s educational plan along with related services. There may also be a discussion of appropriate accommodations for your child\u2019s program, should this be appropriate. The team will discuss the amount of time per week that your child will receive these\u00a0<\/span>proposed<\/span><\/i>\u00a0services. If the recommendation of the school team is that your child\u2019s placement be a therapeutic setting, you will have the opportunity to visit prior to your child beginning the placement. You do not need to sign an agreement to a specific therapeutic placement if you have not yet been given an opportunity to see the recommended placement. You can expect that these services will begin as near as possible to your child\u2019s third birthday. At the conclusion of this initial IEP meeting, you will be asked to sign your agreement to the goals and objectives, placement (if appropriate) in a special education classroom and specific supports and services for your child. If you want to review the document, you should sign that you attended the meeting. Until you sign your agreement to services and supports, no services will be available to your child. If you disagree with parts of your recommended services, supports or placement, it is wise to put these concerns in writing (e-mail is sufficient) and request another meeting to discuss these concerns.<\/span><\/p>\nIf your child is found ineligible for Special Education, a rationale for this decision will be discussed with you. This will be based upon a review of all assessments conducted for your child and eligibility criteria, which is based upon educational code. Your IEP team may suggest community resources which you may want to access.<\/span><\/p>\nIf your child is found eligible for Special Education, you can expect a review of the goals, services and supports at least once a year and progress toward your child\u2019s goals and objectives to be reported to you at least as often as children in the school district receive a report card. You may, of course, request a review more frequently than once a year. As staff at AbilityPath\u2019s Family Resource Center, who are also parents of a child with developmental disabilities, we ask ourselves each summer, \u201cWhat are the best activities for our kids?\u201d\u00a0 Like most parents, the answer is always — summer camps! They offer a variety of options, locations, themes, and times, including day-only activities and overnight stays. I have been sending my son August to summer camps for several years now.\u00a0 August, who is a teenager, has autism.\u00a0 So, from one parent to another, I\u2019ve collected camp ideas and tips to help you get the ball rolling.<\/p>\n

1. Start with Your Kid\u2019s Interests and Preferences:\u00a0<\/b>As parents, we each have unique insight into our children\u2019s preferences, triggers, and strengths. Instead of jumping into an overwhelming list of potential camps, start with these introspective questions to reduce the options, helping you find a good fit for your child.<\/p>\n 2. The IEP summarizes your child\u2019s current skills and abilities, established educational goals and objectives (where appropriate) for the school year, describes programs and services designed to assist your child in making progress towards those goals and indicates how often progress towards the goals will be reported to you, the parent.<\/span><\/p>\n The IEP is developed with input from parents and must indicate what services will be provided to your child and the frequency, duration and location of these services.<\/span><\/p>\n The school district will contact you to schedule an IEP meeting at a mutually agreed upon time and place. At this meeting, you will be asked to share your concerns for your child educationally, as well as the strengths of your child. You will find a\u00a0<\/span>Parent Input Form\u00a0<\/b>on the San Mateo County Office of Education website link below<\/span>,\u00a0<\/b>which we encourage you to use to gather your thoughts about the information you wish to share with the other members of the IEP team. Should you wish to bring someone to support you at this IEP, you may do so. You can expect that there will be several educational professionals present at this meeting. Present should be any member of the multidisciplinary team who assessed your child, an administrator who can commit resources to support your child\u2019s proposed program, a translator should you need one, the classroom teacher (if the proposed program includes such a placement).<\/span><\/p>\n At this meeting reports on the results of the evaluations will be presented and discussed. You should feel free to stop and ask questions whenever something is discussed that is unclear to you. You will hear the phrase, \u201c<\/span>present levels of performance\u201d\u00a0<\/b>at the meeting. This refers to the information that has been gathered from a variety of sources such as assessments, observations, and work samples. If you share outside assessments with the team, it must be understood that the recommendations and findings of outside assessors must be\u00a0<\/span>considered\u00a0<\/b>by the educational team, but not necessarily adopted by the IEP team.<\/span><\/p>\n After the results of the assessments have been reviewed, eligibility will be discussed. If your child is found eligible for Special Education services, proposed goals will be presented. These goals typically will be designed to support your child\u2019s educational plan along with related services. There may also be a discussion of appropriate accommodations for your child\u2019s program, should this be appropriate. The team will discuss the amount of time per week that your child will receive these\u00a0<\/span>proposed<\/span><\/i>\u00a0services. If the recommendation of the school team is that your child\u2019s placement be a therapeutic setting, you will have the opportunity to visit prior to your child beginning the placement. You do not need to sign an agreement to a specific therapeutic placement if you have not yet been given an opportunity to see the recommended placement. You can expect that these services will begin as near as possible to your child\u2019s third birthday. At the conclusion of this initial IEP meeting, you will be asked to sign your agreement to the goals and objectives, placement (if appropriate) in a special education classroom and specific supports and services for your child. If you want to review the document, you should sign that you attended the meeting. Until you sign your agreement to services and supports, no services will be available to your child. If you disagree with parts of your recommended services, supports or placement, it is wise to put these concerns in writing (e-mail is sufficient) and request another meeting to discuss these concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n If your child is found ineligible for Special Education, a rationale for this decision will be discussed with you. This will be based upon a review of all assessments conducted for your child and eligibility criteria, which is based upon educational code. Your IEP team may suggest community resources which you may want to access.<\/span><\/p>\n If your child is found eligible for Special Education, you can expect a review of the goals, services and supports at least once a year and progress toward your child\u2019s goals and objectives to be reported to you at least as often as children in the school district receive a report card. You may, of course, request a review more frequently than once a year.
