Shirley Poitier

Family Resource Center Coordinator

Shirley is the mother of an adult son with autism.  She’s worked with various agencies in San Mateo and Santa Clara County, as a parent and professional.  She cares deeply for parents who like herself felt unsupported during a very trying time of caring for a special needs child.  Shirley has a Bachelor of Science degree in Counseling Psychology. She completed her SEAT certificate with COPAA as a Special Education Advocate Trainee.  SEAT is the only nationally developed and recognized year-long course that provides participants with training to become a special education advocate.  Shirley has been a member of Parents & Caregivers of Adult Children with Developmental Disabilities through Parents Helping Parents for many years.  She is excited to work with the East Palo community to support parents and caregivers of special needs children.  Shirley will be facilitating a Parent Support Group in East Palo Alto starting in the fall of 2017.    She believes that support groups and the opportunity to be heard make all the difference in the life of parents who have the gift of a special needs child.  Shirley loves laughter and cookies.
